My favorite ways to eat homemade bread are dipping it in curry or simply having it with butter or cheese. These tomato breadsticks are very popular in our house. I serve it on the side of soups and salads.
How to Make Easy Tomato Breadstick Recipe
It is an easy-to-put-together recipe. These tomato & herb breadsticks are delicious and fantastic for a charcuterie board. To make this breadstick: I added tomato sauce and tomato paste. This dough was mixed in a stand mixer. At the same time, you can make the dough by hand.
These breadsticks are topped with sesame seeds and grated parmesan cheese. However, you can top it with your favorite topping.
You can also bake ahead and freeze these tomato breadsticks for later.
Ingredients for the tomato breadsticks
Flour – I used All- purpose flour. But you can use bread flour.
Yeast – I used 2 1/4 teaspoons of instant yeast.
Salt – 1 teaspoon table salt
Sugar – 1 teaspoon of white granulated sugar. You can leave the sugar out if you don’t like adding sugar.
Olive oil – Use extra virgin olive oil
Water – I needed 1 cup + 2 Tablespoons( 1/8 cup) of water. You might need less or more depending on the weather and flour.
Tomato Sauce & Paste – I added 1/3 cup of tomato sauce( not ketchup) and 2 Tablespoons of Tomato paste.
Garlic Powder – 1/2 Tablespoon of garlic powder
Thyme – I put in 2 teaspoons of dried thyme. However, you can add basil or Italian seasoning to your preference.
Toppings – 1/4 cup parmesan and 1 Tablespoon sesame seeds
How to Make Tomato & Herb Breadstick Recipe
- Combine the flour, salt, sugar, yeast, thyme, and garlic powder in a large bowl.
- Make a well in the center.
- Add the water, tomato paste, tomato sauce, and olive oil to the flour mixture and mix well until all the flour comes together.
- Now, turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead the dough for 10 minutes or until the dough springs back.
- Put the dough into an oiled bowl: cover it with cling wrap and leave it somewhere warm for 1 hour or till the dough has doubled in size.
- After an hour, punch the dough down, and leave it to rest for 10 minutes.
- Divide the dough into 16 equal size pieces.
- Roll each dough ball into a log (about 6 inches).
- Place them on a parchment-lined sheet pan.
- Cover and let it rise for about 30 minutes. (depends on how warm the room is)
- Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 200°C / 392°F
- After 30 minutes, gently brush the breadsticks with olive oil and sprinkle the tops with sesame seeds and grated parmesan cheese.
- Bake the breadsticks for 15- 18 minutes or until slightly golden brown.
- Remove the breadsticks from the oven, let them cool for a few minutes, and serve warm with olive oil.

These breadsticks will store well for 2 days in an airtight container at room temperature or freeze for up to 3 months.
